Around The World With My Acura
In October 2010, I will have owned my Acura Integra LS for 20 years, and during that time, I traveled the world as a career Navy officer. Little did I know that the car I bought new as a Lieutenant would continue on “active duty” long after I retired as a Captain!My Acura has been like a trusty shipmate – always reliable, dependable, and fun to be with. From Hawaii where I first bought the car, up and down the East & West coasts of the U.S., and throughout Europe, my Acura has never let me down. It has crossed California deserts in the heat of summer, and ascended the highest roadways in the Alps in blizzards; it has survived the daily grind of Washington DC rush hour traffic, and kept pace with Mercedes and BMWs on the Autobahn. It has taken my wife and me on some of our most memorable vacations, from Sierra ski resorts to Mediterranean beaches; from world-class cities to quaint European villages; from the serene Napa wine country to Munich’s rollicking beer gardens. To repeat a familiar phrase, my Acura has “been there, done that,” and it just keeps on going after 175,000 miles. And it still passes California’s emissions test, one of the strictest in the country. Moreover, it looks as great as the day I bought it, both inside and out. Even now, after 20 years, people are stunned that the original paint still looks brilliant. Strangers have approached me and asked to buy my car, as have valet parking attendants and even my Acura Service Manager, as recently as last month. I’m in no hurry to sell it, of course, but if that day ever comes, you can be sure I’ll be looking for another Acura to drive for the next 20+ years! Ever wonder who brings together Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, Black Widow, the Incredible Hulk, and all the rest together to form the Avengers? (And don’t say it was the writers at Disney-owned Marvel Comics.)
It was, of course, S.H.I.E.L.D., a secret government organization. And now fans can join.
Marvel will be using S.H.I.E.L.D. at the massive annual Comic-Con comic book convention in San Diego to drum up interest in the film Captain America: The First Avenger, which debuts right smack in the middle of Comic-Con (taking place July 20-24th) as well as The Avengers, which doesn’t come out till 2012.
The key to this is letting any of the show’s 150,000 attendees sign up to be part of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Those who can't be in San Diego can visit JoinSHIELD.com, which is sponsored by Acura, which also sponsored Marvel's Thor. Additionally, “actual set pieces from the movie (will be) placed on the show floor as part of a faux-security and recruiting station for S.H.I.E.L.D.,” according to FirstShowing.com.
Some of the film’s stars (and the movie features such folks as Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo) are scheduled to appear at the convention to stir up fan enthusiasm as well.
S.H.I.E.L.D. recruiting vehicles (Acuras, natch) will be around San Diego to snag any stray conventiongoer who misses the marketing push happening with the convention’s walls.
