Acura gets it right this time with its new RDX

2013-acura-rdx-detroit
This time around, Acura got it right.

Its sport-oriented crossover utility vehicle, the RDX, was added to Acura's lineup just six years ago, complementing the upscale, full-size crossover, the MDX.

But the RDX never quite caught on. Its best year was 2007, its first full year on the market, when 23,356 were sold. In 2011, sales totaled just 15,196.

The RDX's driving dynamics were spot-on, at least in the eyes of enthusiasts. But in an effort to distinguish the RDX from the larger V6-engine MDX, Acura installed a 240-horsepower, 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

It had plenty of punch but in practice delivered lousy fuel economy. Also, because of its handling-oriented suspension system, the RDX transmitted a molar-rattling ride on rough road surfaces.

So of all the vehicles in the Acura portfolio, the RDX was most in need of a replacement or, at a minimum, major surgery.

That's been accomplished with the all-new 2013 model, which is so unlike its predecessor that it could have come from another manufacturer.

There's a family resemblance in the design and styling But where the earlier RDX had a punishing ride, the new one is almost creamy, while still retaining decent handling from a more rigid body structure and more sophisticated steering and suspension system tuning.

Where the former model had power peaks and valleys, the new V6 engine pulls strongly throughout its range, and actually delivers way better fuel economy than the original.

Depending on the circumstances, it runs on three, four or six cylinders. The toggling back and forth among the different modes happens automatically and is unobtrusive.

The RDX gets a fuel consumption rating for the all-wheel drive model of 19 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway, while the front-drive version does slightly better at 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

The original RDX with all-wheel drive had a fuel consumption rating of 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. But that was using the EPA's earlier, more generous and unrealistic ratings, which were subsequently cut back by about 10 percent across the board.

Contributing to the new RDX's performance and fuel economy is a six-speed automatic transmission. On the road, the tested RDX with the all-wheel drive had a solid, planted stance with tactile feedback through the steering wheel and good straight-line tracking. The power steering is electric, sensitive to vehicle speed and enhanced by a thicker and more rigid steering column. It also uses sensors to automatically correct the RDX's attitude in cornering.

Though not what an enthusiast would consider to be sports sedan handling, the RDX attacks twisting roads with precision. With new technologies that include a shorter pedal stroke, the brakes also deliver a confident, progressive feel.

Large and supportive front seats are particularly suited for long hours at the wheel. The back seats are similarly comfortable. Even the center-rear seating position is marginally acceptable, unlike many other vehicles.

Unaccountably, the rear seatbacks do not recline, a flaw from the original RDX.

The RDX also is remarkably quiet on the road, benefiting from a new tire tread design as well as strategically placed insulation and active noise canceling under the hood.

Acura considers the RDX's main competition to be the BMW X3 xDrive 28i and the Audi Q5 2.0T. Both are near-luxury crossovers of about the same size but with less interior room and, when comparably equipped, higher prices. They come with eight-speed automatic transmissions.

The base price of the tested all-wheel drive RDX was $36,605, which included full safety equipment plus automatic climate control, leather upholstery, power sunroof, a rear-view camera with three display modes, pushbutton starting with remote keyless locking, Bluetooth communications, Pandora Internet radio and 18-inch alloy wheels. Headlights turn on and off automatically with the windshield wipers.

The tested all-wheel drive RDX also had a technology package that included navigation with voice recognition, an ELS premium audio system, solar sensing climate control, satellite radio with real-time weather and traffic, and a power tailgate. It had a suggested sticker price of $40,305.

If you don't need the all-wheel drive, you can save $1,400 by ordering the otherwise identical front-drive version.

Paragon Acura - Two (5) Star Reviews on GoogleMaps

  • I don't usually write reviews, but I loved my experience at Paragon Honda!!! Love my new car, and hope that they will continue being as helpful as they were today. The service was excellent, and I got a good deal for my car. -Jackie

I recently purchased (yesterday) the new Acura RDX 2013. I 'traded in' my old 2000 Infinity. The service was absolutely wonderful, everyone was so friendly. All my questions were answered, and price fit my budget perfectly. When the lady that was helping my family learn how to use the technology in the new car (her name was Sandy), she was so polite, and didn't rush us into anything. There were no rude glances, or eye-rolls, which are commonly found in other dealerships. Another example of their excellent service; I had forgotten to drop off my old car's spare key, so returned to the dealership. I found that I was having trouble opening the power tailgate- so called Sandy in again. Unable to discover the problem after a full-hearted attempt, she called her technician in, a very kind lady. They both decided to run the car through to the dealership's garage, just to check that nothing was wrong with our new car. My family was ushered into the waiting room, and offered refreshments. The waiting room is nice, with chairs, internet and television. No other dealership has such, and I've been to quite a few. The service was extremely quick. I barely watched 8 minutes of the program on TV, and was being called out again. I'm not sure why this dealership is getting so many bad reviews, for I completely disagree with them all. I love my new Acura, thank you Paragon for making this happen. -Natalie

Acura at the 2012 Beijing Motor Show

Nsx_615_2012_04_23_01
It should be a busy stretch for Acura dealerships in North America this year with the arrival of the 2013 RDX earlier this month and the 2013 ILX on sale May 22nd. Acura looks to follow suit in China with the introduction of the same two models scheduled to go on sale this fall. The RDX and ILX will join Acura China’s currrent lineup which consists of the RL, TL, MDX and ZDX.

Acura/Honda released a few press images today for the 2012 Beijing Motor Show where the RDX, ILX and the NSX Concept will make its Chinese debut. The images of the NSX Concept are essentially the same we’ve already seen, but rendered with a new red paint color. I’ve read the NSX is indeed displayed at the show with the new paint job, but I haven’t seen any images or videos yet.

The one image of the Chinese spec RDX shows it will get the clear turn-signal treatment as well as headlamp washers which seem to be standard on the Chinese models.

Honda Begins Production of All-New 2013 Acura ILX at Indiana Plant

Renderimage
Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC (HMIN), celebrated the start of mass production of the all-new 2013 Acura ILX today. The first ILX, built exclusively in Indiana, rolled off the assembly line at 10:30 a.m. ET and was greeted by Honda associates, community partners and elected officials, who gathered to mark its launch.

"Acura has a sparkling reputation and we are thrilled to build the gateway vehicle to this brand at our Greensburg facility," said Jun Nishimoto, president of Honda Manufacturing of Indiana. "As the exclusive builder of the ILX, HMIN has a big responsibility. Our associates meet this challenge by working together as one team and today we are ready for our customers to share our pride in this beautiful new product."

The new Acura ILX sedan symbolizes the gateway to the Acura lineup and comes with both gasoline and gas-electric hybrid powertrain options. HMIN produces three versions of the Acura ILX - a 150-horsepower, 4-cylinder 2.0-liter model, a 201-horsepower 2.4-liter model with 6-speed manual transmission, and the ILX Hybrid, with a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. The gasoline engines for the 2.0- and 2.4-liter versions of Acura ILX come from the Anna, Ohio, engine plant of Honda of America Mfg., Inc.

The Acura ILX hybrid version is Acura's first-ever hybrid model, the first hybrid vehicle to be made in America at a Honda plant, and the first Acura model to be produced in Indiana. The Acura ILX joins the TL sedan, ZDX crossover vehicle, and the MDX and RDX sport-utility vehicles as the fifth Acura model produced exclusively in North America. Acura finished second among all luxury brands in the J.D. Power and Associates' 2011 Initial Quality Study.

"This all-new Acura luxury sedan is closely linked to the future of Acura," said Jeff Conrad, vice president and general manager of Acura for American Honda. "Just as the Acura ILX is the gateway to the Acura brand, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana is a gateway to Acura customers."

Honda and Acura Take Top Prizes in Edmunds.com's Best Retained Value Awards

Key_art_edmunds
Honda and Acura took home the top prizes in Edmunds.com's second annual Best Retained Value Awards, which recognize the brands and new car models that have the highest projected residual value after five years, expressed as a percentage of their True Market Value when sold new.

Honda won the 2012 brand award for non-luxury makes for the second consecutive year, while Acura took home the luxury brand award for the first time. Edmunds.com found that Honda's average projected retained value after five years is 47.9%, while Acura's average projected retained value is 44.6%. In each case, the percentage is based on the average five-year retained value of the carmaker's 2012 models that launched prior to the end of 2011.

"Honda has long had a reputation for dependable used vehicles, and that is reflected in today's booming used car market," said Joe Spina, Director of Remarketing at Edmunds.com. "And with Acura beating out all other luxury brands, Honda's family of vehicles continues to expand the company's status as one of the best values available to car buyers today."

Edmunds.com named a total of 23 winners in its model-level categories, ranging from "Sedans Under $20,000" to "Large Heavy Duty Trucks." Ford led all carmakers with five model-level awards, followed by Honda with four. (A full list of the model-level winners can be found in Appendix I at the end of this release).

All model year 2012 vehicles that were launched by the end of 2011 and that had unit sales in February 2012 that were at least 20 percent of the average unit sales for the models in its segment were eligible for this year's model-level Best Retained Value Awards. Edmunds determined each model's competitive segment based on its body type and the sales-weighted average MSRP of all available styles (excluding destination charges) of that model's body type. All makes that had over 100,000 unit sales in 2011 were eligible for this year's brand-level Best Retained Value Awards.

The Best Retained Value Awards are given annually. They join Edmunds.com's other prestigious awards, including the annual True Cost to Own Awards and the Technology Breakthrough Award.

Paragon Acura - (5) Star Review on GoogleMaps

  • I had a great experience at Paragon Acura. When I was first approached by the sales person name Reginald Vanwroten, he did not pressure me at all. In fact he made me feel very comfortable. I then took a look at their inventory and saw the car I liked and then everything was set. The staff was so fast and professional , I was shocked. Before I knew, I now own a 2012 Acura TL. I have not serviced yet but so far my impression is great. Thank you. I truely love Acura. -Robert
