Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive Evolves into a Hybrid Powertrain!

Electric-sh-awd-2-623x415
The next generation of Acura’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive trades torque-vectoring differentials for electric motors, creating a gas/electric hybrid powertrain that is capable of pure electric driving and distributing torque between the right and left rear wheels. The electric SH-AWD system’s hardware includes three electric motors, a V-6 gas engine, a lithium-ion battery, and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Honda will announce the first car  that will receive electric SH-AWD sometime in 2012.

Two 27-hp electric motors on the rear axle take the place of the current system’s electronically controlled differential to meter torque between the left and right wheels. By sending more torque to the outside rear wheel in a turn, the vehicle creates a yaw moment that encourages the car to rotate. While the SH-AWD system used today can only apportion torque when the driver is applying throttle, electric SH-AWD also vectors torque while the vehicle is slowing down. Under deceleration, the electric motor connected to the inside rear wheel uses regenerative braking to produce a negative torque and simultaneously generate electricity to charge the battery. The system can power a car up to 25 mph using electricity, but hard acceleration will cause the engine to fire up earlier.

The heart of the powertain is still a gas engine, specifically a 3.5-liter V-6 making more than 300 hp. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic transmission that has been developed in-house by Honda engineers. A 40-hp electric motor connected to the transmission’s output shaft can send power to the front wheels or generate electricity to charge the battery.

Tokyo 2011: Acura’s Super Handling All Wheel Drive Evolves into a Hybrid Powertrain image

At a technical briefing prior to the Tokyo auto show, we scored a one-lap  test drive of a Honda Accord mule packing electric SH-AWD hardware under its sheet-metal skin. The effectiveness of the torque vectoring rear motors is immediately apparent at turn in, rotating the car much more aggressively than the clutch-based system currently used in the TL, RL, MDX, and ZDX. It creates the sensation of being pushed rather than pulled through the turn. The handling is convincingly sporty but possibly too foreign for drivers heading to their local Whole Foods market. Aggressive driving would also benefit from steering that’s more accurate than the light, imprecise feel found in our mule.

Honda says the system delivers V-8 performance and four-cylinder fuel economy. While we had no way of verifying the efficiency, our internal accelerometer warns that claims of eight-cylinder acceleration are a stretch. Downshifts ordered from the wheel-mounted paddle shifters also weren’t quite ready for prime time, feeling slow and abrupt with no sign of rev matching. We have to note, though, that the car we drove was merely a mule, far from finalized in its calibration. We won’t know just how sporty Acura wants the electric SH-AWD system to be until we hear what car it will land in. Until then, electric SH-AWD is an interesting approach to all-wheel drive that offers much more than all-weather security, namely tangible fuel economy and handling benefits.

Paragon Acura - (5) Star Review on DealerRater

  • I would absolutely recommend this dealership. I had an amazing overall experience, especially with my sales person, Camilo Barrientos. He was professional, courteous, friendly and honestly gave me the best possible price I could find. I purchased a 2012 Acura TSX with Technology Package and initially wanted the car in white with black interior. After a drawn out conversation with my wife, we decided that gray with black was a better choice. Camilo had to get the car from another dealership however he did not complain, he did not try to charge me more, he did his job and did it well. Camilo took care of every single want and need that I had and absolutely went the extra mile for me in order to make me happy. When my wife is in the market for a car in a year or two, we are absolutely going to return to Paragon Acura and ask for Camilo. I'm a Physical Therapist with a Doctorate and I know quality and I know that Paragon Acura and Camilo are the epitome of quality. If you aren't shopping at Paragon and seeing Camilo, you are selling yourself short. -rbdpt10

Acura extends AcuraLink® to new Digital Services

Acuralink_615x275_2011_11_21b
Acura announced today that it will extend the current AcuraLink® brand to a new set of digital services, commencing with the launch of a new AcuraLink® Owner's Mobile App, available to all Acura clients.

The initial features for the AcuraLink® Owner's App will support Acura's Roadside Assistance Program. Acura owners can now conveniently access a wide range of roadside assistance services simply through the new iPhone® app.

The free app, produced with Acura's roadside assistance partner, Cross Country Automotive Services (Cross Country), offers Acura drivers access to a full range of service options available through the sign-and-drive Acura program. Services include items such as comprehensive towing, lock-out assistance, battery jump-start, tire change and fuel delivery.

Acura owners can use the AcuraLink Roadside Assistance app to view scheduled time of arrival and contact information for the dispatched towing service provider, as well as an assigned reference number for the roadside disablement event.  The app also offers a priority emergency button for urgent situations.

"Roadside Assistance is now available at the push of a button with this user friendly application. This is another example of the flexibility, speed and expertise Acura clients have come to expect from our products, services and our brand", said Charles Kendig, Acura Division's Assistant Vice President for National Fixed Operations.

Acura owners can use the app to reach an experienced roadside assistance agent to dispatch a reliable roadside assistance service provider: 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"Acura owners highly value design and engineering innovations within their vehicles, and Cross Country is excited to provide technology that enables Acura owners to easily obtain dependable roadside assistance service and related information when they need it,"said David Ferrick, Cross Country's senior vice president and general manager of Insurance Services and Automotive Markets.

John Bazay’s Stealth Black Acura ZDX

Zdx_615x325_2011_10_26
This Crystal Black Pearl Acura ZDX may be stealthy, but it’s guaranteed to turn heads. Ever since I came across John Bazay’s ZDX in a Vossen Wheels photo gallery, its unique styling has left a lasting impression.

If the lines of the Acura ZDX weren’t already mesmerizing enough, John takes it a step further with the addition of 22 inch wheels, tinted windows and a modified front grille.

In John’s latest update he swapped out the stock springs to lower the ZDX for a more responsive ride a sportier look.

A Legendary Feat – 500,000 Miles Reached

Legend_615x295_2011_11_04
Road trips are pretty common for Tyson Hugie and his 1994 Acura Legend, but today this one was a little more special.

Driving in from Phoenix Arizona, Tyson reached Torrance California where he timed a “milestone” roll-over for his arrival at Acura’s headquarters. Greeted with a red carpet, Tyson’s family, friends and Acura enthusiasts where all present to celebrate his 500,000 mile achievement. Congrats goes out to Tyson and his 1994 Acura Legend for completing a “Legendary Quest“.

Where will he go from here? I hope to hear from Tyson soon, and bring you more photos and video from today’s festivities.

Paragon Acura - (4) Star Review on Yelp

  • I just wanted to share my experience at Paragon Acura in Queens, NY. Two weeks ago I went to Paragon looking for an MDX. I didn't see what I was looking for. So I decided to leave my info to a very knowledgeable and helpful salesman called Reginald W. he called me back last week and showed me the new inventory. I had a few good one to select from, but I picked a 2009 certified Pre-owned. It was a smooth transaction once I told Reggie which car I wanted. He then took me to Mike Francis (finance manager) that explained everything about the finance and the warranty on the car.
I can safely say that I'm very happy with the whole experience and I wanted to share a great experience at a local dealer with everyone. -LM

Acura TL holds its own in crowded midsize luxury market

2012-acura-tl-fd
Midsize luxury sedans are almost as plentiful as pumpkins are in fall.

The 2012 Acura TL SH-AWD Advance test car even looked a bit autumnal in its sparkling Mayan Bronze paint job. This is the top of the TL line and a fine driving car with a sporty edge. TL, which competes with the likes of BMW's 3 Series, Mercedes' C Class, Infiniti's G sedan and Lexus's ES models, comes in two basic configurations. There's the standard TL and the SH-AWD models that offer what Acura calls Super Handling All-Wheel Drive.

The base TL, with six-speed automatic transmission and a 280-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6, lists at $35,605, a reasonable bargain. Adding the SH-AWD raises the price to $39,155 and also gets you a 305-horsepower, 3.7-liter V6.

You can move up several levels of technology, but the more extras you add, the pricier the TL gets. The test car listed at $45,085. Add delivery, and it hit $45,970.

That's a lot of money, but Acura delivers a pleasant, refined sedan. TL features smooth power delivery from its VTEC engine and a six-speed automatic that features SportShift, clutchless manual shifting. Its automatic shifts are nearly seamless.

TL is quiet inside and, with the SH-AWD, delivers superb traction on wet roads, plus a bit of sportiness in the corners. While the steering is less precise than the Infiniti or BMW, it feels on par with its Mercedes and Lexus competitors. There is moderate feedback and a moderately heavy wheel feel.

This is no lightweight. TL feels substantial and, at 4,001 pounds, it is. It rides on a 109.3 in. wheelbase, stretching out bumpy roads pretty well. Ride is controlled, but not soft. You still feel imperfections, but they don't bother you much, despite the car's sport-tuned four-wheel independent suspension. The SH-AWD Advance model also features 19-inch tires, up from the 17-inch tires that are standard on lower-level models.

Braking is good, with four wheel discs, ABS and stability control. The all-wheel-drive system naturally works with all that to make sure you have traction no matter the road conditions.

One of the TL's benefits that surprised me a bit was its gas mileage. The EPA rates this at 18 mpg city and 26 highway using premium fuel. I got 23.2 mpg in about 60% highway driving, but with up to four people and some luggage aboard about half that time. For a powerful V6, that's good.

The test car featured leather seats, a darker reddish brown that gave the car a rich look. The dash was a brown textured finish with a carbon fiber look dash and door trim, all adding to the car's ritzy feel. The steering wheel and shifter were leather wrapped.

Acura's seats are a comfortable mix of mildly contoured bottom and more contoured seat back cushions. The seats feature power lumbar support with two memory settings for the driver's seat and three-speed heated and cooled cushions.

Dash gauges are simple and attractive, but not flashy, with white numbers on a black background and a digital trip computer readout between them. All are easy to see behind the tilt/telescope steering wheel.

On the dash above the center stack is a good sized screen for the radio and navigation system. Unlike some, this one is set back a ways, which is easier for viewing while driving.

The person who buys this model, though, is after technology. There's push-button start, now becoming commonplace, a navigation system with voice recognition, a rearview camera that prevents parking lot dings or worse, and a communications system with traffic alerts and weather updates.

There's also a surround sound stereo system with 10 speakers and all the usual USB hookups and such. Most important, is the blind-spot warning system that alerts you with a flash in the outside mirrors if a vehicle is in your blind spot. It is a real safety benefit.

Climate controls are good, with dual temperature toggles for each front seat occupant.

Overhead is a sunroof, sun visors that slide, an automatic night mirror and HomeLink security system.

The trunk space seems reasonable for a midsize luxury car, but is just 13 cubic feet, a couple short of most cars in this class. I managed to load four pieces of luggage in back, though. Speaking of the back end, the TL's rear styling is handsome, along with its profile.

If you can get beyond the funky nose, the car is a primo luxury sedan. Couple that with its reasonable gas mileage for its strong performance and, at its entry-level, the TL remains a good value.

Congratulations to Peter and Wendy for earning this exceptional review!

Paragon Acura - (5) Star Review on DealerRater

  • I had been looking for a replacement car for over three weeks and thought I may not be able to find one before my family would need their cars back again. Then I came upon a CPO '07 TL Type-S and couldn't believe the price! Peter Pazmino was able to rectify my bad situation when I had tried to inquire about the car at 3 different times. He had put me at ease and we finally worked out a deal. My girlfriend and I had flown out from Atlanta, GA on Saturday to pick it up, and Peter was there to pick us up personally from the airport. When we had gotten to the dealership, he was even more hospitable by offering us something warm to drink since the rain had now turned to snow that Saturday afternoon. He was very professional and did not try to rush us even though there were other customers in the showroom. After the deal was signed, I had asked him if I could go inspect the car in a covered place. That's where I had ended up meeting Wendy Deshais who was there to explain everything in detail about my car since my last car was not as fully loaded as this one. She did a very thorough job and even helped plot the course of my return home in the navigation unit. -ntranced
