5 interesting facts about Thanksgiving that you may not have known!

The American Thanksgiving feast is one of the world's most iconic holidays, but there is a lot most people don't know about it!  Here are 5 things that you may or may not have known about Thanksgiving and its origin in America!

1.)  Of the Mayflower's original 102 passengers, only 40 of them were "Pilgrims" as we would recognize them.  The rest were called the "Strangers", men and women just looking to hitch a ride to the new world.  In fact, the Mayflower wasn't even originally intended to be a human transport vessel; it was supposed to be a wine transport.

2.)  Despite Macy’s being the largest, the oldest Thanksgiving parade was held in Philadelphia in 1920 by Gimbels department store. The parade was very small, with only about 50 people.

3.)  The Pilgrims didn't actually dress in full-black attire with metal buckles on their hats and shoes.  In reality, metal buckles would've been too expensive for the incredibly destitute Pilgrims.  It is more likely that they would've used leather laces and straps instead of the buckles.

4.)  Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird, feeling that the eagle was a creature predisposed to "bad moral character".  He wanted to instead pay homage to the bird that had more historical significance to the young country.

5.)  When George Washington advocated for a national Thanksgiving celebration, a number of other founding fathers and statesmen were supportive of the measure. Thomas Jefferson was not one of them. Jefferson referred to the idea as “the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard."  Guess he wasn't a fan of cranberry sauce!

Winter Weather Is Almost Here, Is Your Car Ready?

Have you prepared your car for the winter weather that’s fast approaching? Here are some tips to make sure you are fully prepared for whatever this year’s winter weather decides to throw at you.

Regular Maintenance

Now’s the time to get your car up to speed on all of its regular maintenance. That means taking care of any fluids that may have been neglected while you were out enjoying the summer sun or going in for that 60,000-mile tune-up if you’re due. Check, change and/or top off your oil, coolant, brakes and transmission fluid as needed. In the case of your oil or automatic transmission, make sure you get a high-quality filter, too.

When looking at your car’s brakes, check to see if your rotors are warped or cracked. Do they have deep grooves or are the pads worn close to their minimum clearance? Your vehicle will be experiencing harsher conditions soon, so avoid any potential problems as soon as possible. Make sure all your lights are working properly to ensure good visibility. New bulbs are easy to install yourself or easy to have installed when getting your vehicle serviced. The same goes for windshield wipers. If your blades are more than six months old, odds are it’s time to swap them out for new ones.

Check Your Tires

Go ahead and have your tires rotated and inspected. The last thing you need in cold, wet weather is to be driving on bald or dry rotted tires.

Consider looking into snow (or winter) tires, depending on your location or length of time you’ll be spending in the snow. Winter tires are made with special low temperature resilient rubber compounds and have deep treads that grip unplowed snow and ice.

Don’t forget to make sure your spare tire has enough air in it. Once you’ve made sure everything looks good, take a look at your tire pressure.

Stock Your Car

Stranded by the side of the road can be dangerous in the best of conditions, but when sub-zero temperatures or bad weather is involved, it could become deadly. Carrying these supplies is essential:

- a blanket
- jumper cables
- a flashlight
- chains
- a first-aid kit
- a small knife
- flares
- water gloves
- small shovel
- waterproof matches
- ice scraper
- a bag of sand or kitty litter to help provide traction if your car is stuck in the snow

6 Car Myths That Cost You Money Every Year

Most of us view our vehicles as something between an immutable feature of daily life and a rabid, suicidal dragon that gorges on explosions until it inevitably explodes itself. That's because we all know it's only a matter of time until something goes horribly wrong with our cars, and then we're epically, mythically screwed. As a result, various rules of thumb for regular car maintenance have been passed down through the generations -- precious wisdom handed to us by our ancestors in order to stave off, for a spell, the ruinous, virgin-eating car repair monster. But many of these rules are, at best, wildly outdated and, at worst, a total waste of money.

#6. Change Your Oil Every 3,000 Miles

Photos.com
The Myth:
To maximize your engine's life, you should change the oil and filter every 3,000 miles. At this point you should also say several quiet prayers to the gods of breakdowns and have a mid-ranking church official -- no lower than a nun but no higher than a bishop -- bless the water in your vehicle's coolant.
Photos.com
"I'm sorry, my child, but the Lord can't drive or bless a manual transmission."
The Reality:
The idea that you should change your car's oil every 3,000 miles is so pervasive that it has its own Wikipedia page ... specifically debunking it. This misconception has its roots laid all the way back to the 1970s, when oil technology was still developing and the engine operating environment wasn't nearly as smooth and controlled as it is today. Back then, 3,000 miles was actually a pretty good rule of thumb. So was "Never trust a European" and "Chest hair, son: Always chest hair." However, just like international relations and grooming habits, engine and oil technology have improved drastically over the decades. The life of the oil in your car has now increased far beyond that allegedly sacred 3,000-mile barrier.

So why do we hang onto it? Because no one has bothered to tell the oil-change industry. Those poor, naive fellas still "recommend" changing it every 3,000 miles, despite the fact that synthetic oils lasting up to 15,000 miles have been available for years. If only somebody would show them the backs of those bottles in their tiny, uncomfortable lobbies; why, we're sure they'd immediately mend their ways and return all that needlessly spent money of yours.

5 things your car will finally do in 2020!

By John Brandon
We'll spare you the far-future posturing and flying-car jokes, but the truth is -- for the 200 million automobile owners in America, the future looks bright. In fact, we've already made some pretty impressive headway. The 2008 Mercedes S-Class can change lanes on the highway automatically, and both the Toyota Prius and the Lexus LS-460 can self-park at the push of a button.

But that's just a drop in the bucket compared to what's in the works. With eyes wide and mouths agape, we peeked under the curtain at the cars of the future. Here's what we can tell you about what you'll be driving in 2020.

1. Your car will predict the future

Self-parking cars are great and all, but there's a big difference between features of convenience and the kinds of safety technologies on the horizon. We're talking about cars that can see into the future and react on a dime -- whether that means detecting a person crossing the street or swerving to avoid oncoming traffic.

There's no doubt the artificial intelligence required to protect you from those dangers is incredibly sophisticated, but it's becoming more widely available every day. Vehicles equipped with hundreds of sensors will be able to monitor their surroundings, both from a short-range perspective (to detect things like barriers and stop signs) and a long-range perspective (to detect things like a truck barreling toward you). But they won't be working alone.

Cars of the future will also utilize video monitors located at intersections. Currently planned for many towns and cities across the United States, these monitors will feed data to your car over a wireless network. From as far as 30 miles away, they'll be able to transmit video imagery right to your dashboard. So, if you didn't see that pedestrian walking into the street, the video system would know where you were, know about the pedestrian, and warn you to pay attention.

It's similar to Google's new Street View maps system. Already available in larger cities like San Francisco and New York, the application shows fluid, 360-degree video images of nearly every block in the area. And while it's only accessible from computers now, similar real-time images will soon be available right on your dash.

Taking the concept one step further, engineers also plan to equip cars with computer processors that can analyze these kinds of video feeds to assess abnormalities in traffic. So rather than just warning you of an upcoming obstacle in the road, cars will use the data to deploy airbags at just the right location within the vehicle. Or, they could decide to take over the steering when needed.

Basically a smarter version of the existing Electronic Stability Control feature (available on several luxury car models now), the cars will monitor weather and traffic, and adjust tire speeds to make sure you stay on the road and don't flip the vehicle. How long 'til everyone on the block has one? The system will be required on all new U.S. cars for the 2012 model year, but you should expect to see it even sooner than that.

2. Your car will talk to the road and the road will talk back

It's one thing to have a car that senses other vehicles, but something else entirely to have the road itself know where your car is at all times. To make that possible, city governments and automakers are joining forces to launch new Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) systems. Using short-range wireless signals, vehicles will be able to communicate not only with each other, but with all the infrastructure on the road.

Transportation agencies in cities across America currently have plans to install DSRC technology at major intersections and high-accident areas. In response, major auto manufacturers will offer DSRC support for their cars.

The communication network will monitor where cars are traveling, as well as read traffic-light information and road-sign sensors. With both cars and roadways enabled, formerly unimaginable safety benefits will become a reality. For instance, ambulances will be able to trigger upcoming traffic lights to change from red to green.

But there are plans to go even further. According to DaimlerChrysler, old satellites (accurate to about 3 feet) could be replaced with much more powerful Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, which could pinpoint your vehicle to a few centimeters. And while there are only 30 active GPS satellites in space today, engineers hope to have as many as 50 in the future.

The new system will be able to track weather conditions and suggest alternate routes. For example, you could avoid a tornado in Kansas or damaging hail in Fargo, or loop around Chicago traffic using real-time data that's continually updated.

3. Your car will take itself into the shop for maintenance

Having wireless networks set up along the roadways -- such as those necessary for seeing images of upcoming intersections -- translates to endless possibilities for cars and drivers in the future. Example: Imagine passing a maintenance station that remotely signals your in-car navigation system that it's time for an oil change. Better yet, it could go ahead and wirelessly upgrade your car's software modules or check the performance of its safety sensors.

Perhaps even more exciting are the possibilities for electric hybrids. Once electric cars outnumber gas-engine cars, satellite-based wireless power systems could recharge vehicles from space. How's that possible? The satellites would gather solar energy from space and then transmit the power to a receiver on the vehicle via a wireless signal. It would work the same as a wireless computer network, except the signal would carry energy instead of data.

4. When you drive through McDonald's, your car will be debited, not your VISA

Microprocessors are already embedded into many parts of an automobile -- from an engine's control-valve timing system to the seat controls. So why not have a microprocessor that manages financial transactions? Several states already offer special debit cards that mount to your windshield as you pass through a toll, but those are primitive compared to what's to come.

In the future, when you pull into the drive-thru at a fast food restaurant, a local Wi-Fi network will be able to communicate with your vehicle by way of an encrypted wireless signal. In other words, after you order your food, the car will automatically make the financial transaction. And the electronic signature? It's likely that the navigational systems in your car will have expanded beyond route planning and safety warnings into something involving a signature pad that would allow you to type in a passcode (or use a fingerprint or eye retina scan) as an electronic signature.

Once the infrastructure is in place, your car will become like a mini-ATM for drive-thru establishments. Of course, whether or not that's a good thing for your budget remains to be seen.

5. Go ahead, take a nap. Your car will drive itself

Futuristic cars tricked out with their own ATMs and self-maintenance features sound nice, but for many engineers, that's just the tip of the iceberg. The real holy grail? A fully automated, driverless car.

Shining a big spotlight on such efforts is DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), a Department of Defense organization aimed at perfecting the robotic technology needed for safe, autonomous military vehicles.

In 2005, Stanford robotics expert Sebastian Thrun won the DARPA Grand Challenge with his autonomous car, Stanley. Although the competition is aimed at developing machinery to protect soldiers, Thrun believes the technology will reach civilians sooner than you might think. And driverless cars, he believes, could save thousands of lives each year.

In June 2007, Thrun's new robotic roadster, Junior, completed several test runs in preparation for the DARPA Urban Challenge (scheduled for November 2007). Although Junior never went faster than 15 mph, it made a three-point U-turn and navigated through a four-way stop. That's right; Thrun is getting close to achieving a fully automated, road-ready car.

Where could this lead? Well, a highway system for starters -- say, from San Francisco to Los Angeles -- for driverless vehicles only. Using a wireless signal, barriers on either side of the road could communicate with cars to keep them on track. And vehicles could simply use older cruise-control technology to maintain steady speeds.

Conceivably, this would allow drivers to sleep through long stretches of highway -- or at the very least read the morning paper and drink their coffee. Another advantage is that these routes could have less restrictive speed limits -- likely well over 100 mph -- which could redefine the morning commute for many.

Maintenance Tip Monday

Bodywork / paint

Keeping your paint finish in good condition

Only choose superior car detailing supplies to keep your car's interior and exterior like new. There are plenty of decent quality waxes and polishes on the market today and if the last time you waxed or polished your car was over a decade ago, things have changed considerably since then. The wax and polish compounds are far more sophisticated both in terms of protection from fading, the look of the finish, and the ease of application. For example Turtle Wax Ice gets rid of that old problem of white wax residue. Is a clean car a vanity thing? Partly, yes, but if you park under a tree where birds help repaint your car with recycled blueberries, that guck will come off a lot easier if it falls on a waxed paint job.

Tip: If you find a bird has pooped on your car, wash it off as quick as you can. There are compounds in bird waste that can damage most car paint jobs. If you leave it in the sun and the poop bakes on, you could end up with a dull spot in the paint.
Also: If you want to show your support for a cause, car magnets are better than bumper stickers. They don't damage the paint and are easy to move around and ultimately remove when the fad has passed.

Gov. Cuomo announces tougher penalties for texting while driving

NEW YORK - Gov. Andrew Cuomo has announced tougher penalties for drivers caught texting behind the wheel.

Drivers caught texting while driving will get five points on their license – an increase from the current penalty of three points. Cuomo is also backing legislation that would see drivers with junior or probation licenses receive a 60-day suspension for texting.

"We want the message to be very clear to young drivers,” says the governor. “Don't do it. Don't think about doing it. And if they are doing it - we want to catch them when they're young.”

The governor has called for a summerlong crackdown on texting while driving. State police have been ordered to increase patrols and will be out in force starting this weekend. The new penalties take effect Saturday.

What We Know Now About the Next Acura NSX

This is agony: a prolonged, unnerving, and cruel tease.

Way back in January of 2012, Acura—Honda's fancy-pants division—put the NSX Concept on display at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Finally, here was confirmation that a successor to the brilliant original NSX midengine sports car was under development. Then, in 2013, a second NSX Concept appeared in Detroit with a more completely realized interior and the promise that a midengine supercar similar to it in appearance would enter production in "about two years."

All that's missing are the details: what will power the beast (though we know it will be a gas–electric hybrid incorporating some sort of V-6 engine), when exactly it's going on sale, how many will be built, and the ballpark in which its price will land. Honda has dribbled out the facts that the car will be engineered and built in North America. The NSX will be sold around the world as an Acura wherever that brand exists, and as a Honda everywhere else. Thin gruel.

So it was with giddy hopefulness that PM joined in on a conference call with Ted Klaus, the American who is chief engineer on the new NSX. Maybe, just maybe, he'd spill the all-alloy beans about the substance of the next NSX. Just maybe, all our anticipatory frustrations would drain away. Well, at least some of them. Okay, a few.

Klaus, it turns out, joined Honda back in 1990, shortly after the first NSX went on sale and just in time to join the chassis-dynamics engineering staff working on the well-loved 1993 Acura Integra GS-R. His big project before the NSX was the integration of electromechanical all-wheel drive and active dampening in the 2007 Acura MDX. And until his current assignment, he was the chief dynamic evaluator for North American products. Good experience going in on a project like the new NSX, which (we assume) is going to push the technological frontiers in those areas.

"On a personal note, I love cars," Klaus says. "I love driving cars. For me personally, part of maintaining that balance in my life of work versus happiness is just getting in a car and driving it. Or just seeing a beautiful car. And having that intimate experience of driving a car. That really recharges my spiritual battery. And that's why I'm superexcited, and probably why I was chosen for this project. Because that's the key attribute of any sports car, and certainly the NSX."

So where will the NSX be in the sports-car universe? "In order to understand the space we intend to occupy," Klaus explains, "you have to understand the space the original vehicle occupied. We're calling it NSX, and that stands for New Sportscar eXperimental. That's what it has always stood for and that's what it will stand for. So first and foremost we had to understand—how will we as a team create this new sports experience? How will we experiment? How will we come up with new methodologies to achieve those timeless sports-car values?"

"'Human fit' is designing the vehicle around the driver. And the driver is the smartest control element of the vehicle. We can never make the vehicle smarter than the driver. So human fit is all about getting the vehicle out of the way of the driver. And then related to this human fit and this user-friendliness, the key dynamic element is this 'vivid response.' So the space the NSX will occupy is a space that's driver-centric, it's respectful of the larger, broader, timeless sports-car values. But it's our own space defined by the first-gen NSX. Which is tremendous sensitivity to the driver, supporting the driver, giving the driver a partner to go out and experience pure driving pleasure. Then the issue is one of what I call gain. You know, how fast? As you're experiencing pure driving pleasure, how fast can you go around the track? Maintaining that sense that the driver is the center of the performance."

Is all that philosophically compatible with an electric–hybrid drivetrain? "It's a servant to the driver," Klaus contends. "So when the driver pushes on the throttle, the electric motor is there, creating the type of response that is consistent with a very lightweight, low-mass vehicle." Klaus says the same can be said for the torque-vectoring capacity that Honda has developed going back to the Prelude, and for braking too. "This is for the driver. This is to put a smile on the driver's face."

While Honda is closely guarding the actual launch date for the new NSX, Klaus says, the date really does exist. "The development is proceeding on a very specific schedule, and the development team is in place," Klaus says. "We're leading that development in Ohio. The powertrain is being led in Japan. We're all systems go."

Of course, the next NSX will be pricey. But in today's sports-car market there's $100,000 pricey, $200,000 pricey, $800,000 pricey, like the upcoming Porsche 918, and $1 million-plus pricey, like the stunning Ferrari LaFerrari. "We've always been compared to the pinnacle Ferrari of its day and age," Klaus says. "That's the 458 Italia in today's day and age. But the legacy of NSX is that amazing affordability as well. So within the range of the [Porsche] 911, which isn't saying much. But the point is that the person who will be excited to own and drive this vehicle will have a tremendous sense that they have the best combination of technologies to give them their desired sports-car experience . . . at a price that's only a fraction of those vehicles looking up."

There will be only 100 Honda employees assembling the NSX at the new Performance Manufacturing Center currently under construction in an existing building at Honda's Marysville, Ohio, property. There are few details about exactly how the NSX will be built. But whether that is a traditional moving assembly line or some other process, with only 100 workers in the plant it's unlikely that there will be a lot of new NSXs produced

So, after this conference call, what do we know? Just enough that we want to know much more and to stoke the desire to drive it. And that's more than enough to keep the agony of this tease going.

Acura NSX Production Site Selected in Ohio

05/14/2013 - MARYSVILLE, Ohio

Acura today announced that the all-new NSX supercar will be produced at a new Performance Manufacturing Center in Ohio, a $70 million advanced production facility encompassing 184,000 square feet to be housed inside Honda's former North American Logistics facility and located in the midst of Honda's existing R&D and production engineering operations.

The site for the new production facility, which will be Honda's third auto plant in Ohio, is only a few miles from the Honda R&D Americas, Inc. Ohio Center that is engineering the supercar for production and adjacent to Honda of America Mfg.'s Marysville Auto Plant. The Performance Manufacturing Center also is close to Honda Engineering North America, Inc., center for the development of new production technologies.

A part of Honda of America, the Performance Manufacturing Center will be a unique manufacturing operation that will employ approximately 100 highly skilled manufacturing associates drawn from within Honda's existing operations in Ohio. In addition, associates at Honda's engine plant in Anna, Ohio, will assemble the NSX powertrain.

"Thirty years ago, building cars in America was a big dream. Working together, here in Ohio and across North America we turned this dream into reality," said Hidenobu Iwata, president & CEO of Honda of America and the head of Honda's manufacturing operations in North America. "The location of this facility is in the midst of one of the greatest collections of engineering and production talent in the world. So it makes sense that we will renew the dream and build this high-tech, supercar in Marysville, Ohio."

In addition to the plant location, Honda announced that Honda R&D Americas chief engineer Ted Klaus is leading the global team developing the new NSX, and Clement D' Souza, associate chief engineer at Honda of America, is leading the team that will bring NSX to mass production in 2015.

"This new plant will be as unique as the vehicle we will build here," said D'Souza. "In creating the plan for this plant, we looked closely at each process and determined the perfect blend of associate craftsmanship and technology to adopt a new approach to manufacturing."

The Acura NSX Concept was on display at the event, attended by local community and government leaders, including Ohio Governor John Kasich, showcasing the NSX's low and wide stance that will help fulfill the Acura brand product direction centered on the synergy between man and machine.

The new NSX is being developed by a global R&D team led by designers and engineers at Honda R&D Americas, Inc. located in Los Angeles, Calif., and Raymond, Ohio. The NSX will feature a unique powertrain and body structure to provide an incredible driving experience. It will be powered by a mid-mounted V-6 engine mated to Acura's innovative new Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) system.

"We have a very clear understanding of the high customer expectations luxury buyers around the world have for a supercar, and our challenge is to exceed them and create new value for the customer," said Klaus. "This new Performance Manufacturing Center will be key to this challenge."

Once selected, the team of production associates at the Performance Manufacturing Center will begin training and establishing manufacturing processes that will be used to build the all-new NSX. The next generation NSX will be built exclusively at the all-new Performance Manufacturing Center. In addition to being sold in North America, the NSX will be exported to customers throughout the world.

The original Acura NSX was built at the Takanezawa Plant in Japan from 1990 until production moved to the Suzuka Plant in early 2004, where it was produced until 2005. Part of the Tochigi Factory, the Takanezawa Plant was the first manufacturing facility in the world to mass-produce an all-aluminum body and balance advanced production equipment with hands-on "craftsman" processes.
