Mini Acura NSX Back on the Table

Acura-small-nsx-front-three-quarters
While the stillborn, V-10-powered NSX was being developed, Honda was also working on a related and obscure project referred to internally as the Small NSX. At the time it was just one of several advanced R&D ideas sitting in the design room. Then the financial crisis hit, causing Honda to kill the NSX and shelve all other sports car projects. But Honda has since rebounded, and as we know, the NSX has been reborn as an all-wheel drive hybrid. Now we're hearing the Small NSX may be back on the drawing board as well. While the words "Small NSX" may conjure up visions of a successor to the S2000, our inside source tells us this is not the case, and that it will look much like a shrunken version of the big-boy NSX, something along the lines of the car you see in this artist's impression. Our source also tells us that like the NSX, it will be equipped with a version of Honda's SH-AWD system.

Power will likely be provided by a turbocharged direct-injection engine. Honda currently has a number of engines that could fit the bill, including the 3.5-liter V-6, 2.4-liter I-4, and 2.0-liter I-4 already offered in several of its American-market products. Given Honda's America-focused development, overseas engines such as its 660cc and 1.0-liter mills are unlikely to be considered. Of the possible three, the 2.4-liter is the most likely candidate. There's also the possibility that it will be fitted with some kind of hybrid drivetrain.

Our source also tells us the Small NSX will make use of a number of parts from the NSX to help recoup development costs. Given that both cars will be developed at Honda of America's R&D center in Ohio (we're told that in July Honda HQ assigned several of its top test drivers and engineers to the facility for a five-year stint), it's a logical move. The NSX remains on track to return for the 2015 model year. If it's indeed green-lit, the Small NSX could follow a year or two afterward, before the drivers and engineers head home in 2017. Don't expect it to be a bargain sports car, however. Given the amount of DNA it's likely to share with the NSX, the Small NSX would likely cost between $50,000 and $60,000.

Welcome back to the work week fans! Here is a Monday maintenance tip to keep your seats looking brand new!

Car-interior-cleaning
Renew Fabric Upholstery

  • Spraying fabric car seats and carpets with a fabric protectant, such as Scotchgard, will make them resist dirt and stains, and make them easier to clean. Thoroughly clean the fabrics before using one of these products and then test the product on an inconspicuous place to be sure the treatment will not discolor the fabric.

A big thank you to the author of this awesome review! Great job team!

Vossen Wheels Photo: Acura TL on VVSCV2

2012-09-18_1339
It’s been a bit too long since I last featured a Vossen Photo, so here’s a fresh one hot out of the oven that you’re guaranteed to love.

I don’t know much about the build, but the 20″ Matte Graphite CV2s are looking mighty good on this stealthy black 4G TL. The shots and the editing came together nicely for this gallery, they combine for an eerie, ghostly feel that match the car perfectly.

Happy Monday fans! Here is a maintenance tips to help keep your clean as a whistle!

Blast Mats with the Hose

  • When washing your car, drag out the rubber or carpet floor mats and blast them with the hose. This will dislodge dirt particles that, if allowed to build up, will grind holes in your mats. Let the mats dry thoroughly in the sun before reinstalling them.

All-New 2013 Acura ILX Joins Acura Line-Up of IIHS Top Safety Pick Vehicles

11891945-2013-acura-ilx
The all-new 2013 Acura ILX has received the highest possible safety rating of TOP SAFETY PICK from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side and rear crashes, plus rollover performance based on ratings in the Institute’s tests.

The all-new 2013 ILX, along with the 2013 RDX and 2012 TL, MDX, and TSX sedan and Sport Wagon, have all earned IIHS 2012 TOP SAFETY PICK ratings and the highest possible score of GOOD in all four Institute tests, including the rigorous roof-strength test.

All models in the current Acura line up utilize the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. ACE is an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment.

Further, standard safety equipment on all Acura models includes Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with traction control, anti-lock brakes, dual-stage/multiple-threshold front airbags, front-side airbags with passenger side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), side curtain airbags for all outboard seating positions, front seatbelts with automatic tensioning system and load limiters, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and Daytime Running Lights (DRL).

Acura’s belief in “Safety Through Innovation” is the foundation for the brand’s commitment to leadership in safety— and excellent safety is a paramount element in every new vehicle that Acura builds. Acura’s goal is for all models to provide a high level of safety regardless of size or the price of the vehicle.

Welcome back to the work week fans! Here is a maintenance tip to help keep your car interior looking fresh!

Vacuuming-inside-car
Clean the inside, too

  • Vacuum and sponge your interior every time you wash your car. Dirt particles are abrasive, and spilled liquids, such as soda, can be corrosive. Vacuum your interior thoroughly with a powerful vacuum (small cordless models are generally too weak). Use the appropriate wand heads when vacuuming. The bare metal wand can mar and scratch surfaces. Sponge vinyl surfaces clean with a solution of mild detergent and water.

Acura NSX Headed for Racetrack in GT Form

Acura
The new Acura NSX is on track to join the ranks of GT sports car competition as early as 2014, possibly as a gasoline-electric hybrid.

Plans are for the new midengine version of the NSX to be offered as a 2015 production model, but Honda Performance Development Vice President Steve Erikson said the car will be competing as soon as the Acura appears in dealers' showrooms.

The hybrid will have a 3.5-liter V6 with twin electric motors incorporated into the Acura all-wheel-drive powertrain. The car will be built in the Marysville (Ohio) Auto Plant.

A SpeedTV.com report Tuesday suggests that Honda plans to make good on the promise earlier this year by Erikson's predecessor, Erik Berkman, that the car, unveiled as a concept car in January at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, will race in the GT ranks. Where, and in which specific series, is yet to be determined.

A likely venue if the car is to be raced as a hybrid is the new Grand Am GX division for non-traditional or experimental models, which is to be launched next season. The most high-profile sports car race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, at present does not accommodate hybrids. The famous race does allow one experimental entry each year.

Both situations, of course, could easily change — for better or for worse for the NSX. The long-range fate of the GX class may be affected by the pending merger of Grand Am and American Le Mans series in North America.

However, the ACO has demonstrated a measure of flexibility over the past decade by permitting diesel engines in the Le Mans Prototype 1 class. A hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle will race as the experimental entry at Le Mans in 2013 and as green initiatives continue to emerge in racing, GT racing rules could evolve as well.

HPD is exploring possibilities among a variety of GT series, Erikson said, according to Speed.

"Given that we've had some good success in offering sports cars in prototypes, I think we've got the capability to offer the NSX in some point in the future that customers can buy and race," Erikson told Speed.

Acura NSX debuts at the 2012 Moscow International Automobile Salon

Nsx_615_2012_08_29_01
Takanobu Ito said it in Detroit earlier this year, Acura will soon be expanding into Russia. August 29 at the 2012 Moscow International Automobile Salon Acura showed off a taste of what’s to come: the NSX Concept. They won’t see a production NSX until 2015, but if what Ito said stays true, Acura could enter the Russian market as early as next year.
